Foraging walks in Cumbria for Autumn 2026
Friday 4th September – Evening walk in Askham, Penrith
6pm – 8pm
£15-£25pp
Join Abbi for an easy walk around Askham village to learn how to identify and forage for different wild foods, and what to do with them. We’ll be focusing on the different autumn species most commonly found in hedgerows and along verges, and in woodlands and meadows. We’ll have a couple of different drinks and nibbles to taste along the way made from foraged ingredients – and will finish in time for a pint at the pub afterward!
This walk is suitable for all ages and experience levels. We will spend some time in the peaceful village of Askham itself, before heading through the picturesque churchyard, through a couple of fields and some woodland, and along a small country lane. The walk is mostly flat and fairly even underfoot, but not suitable for mobility scooters. The loop is about 1.5 miles – although we move very slowly, as we’re constantly stopping to look at things!

Sunday 13th September – Walk and picnic in Kirkby Stephen
2.30pm – 5.30pm
£30-£50pp
Learn to identify wild food growing right on your doorstep on this gentle guided walk around Stenkrith Park and the River Eden in Kirkby Stephen. We’ll learn how to safely forage for and gather common autumnal plants (and possibly fungi), as well as how to process them and use them in the kitchen and medicinally, all in beautiful woodland and riverside fields. Afterwards, we’ll gather together for a picnic I’ve prepared for you in advance using ingredients we’ve explored on the walk.
This walk is suitable for all ages and experience levels. We will be walking along an old railway line before heading through a couple of fields, then meandering back up through woodland to our picnic spot. The walk is mostly flat and fairly even underfoot, but due to some brief steep sections not suitable for mobility scooters. The loop is about 1.5 miles – although we move very slowly, as we’re constantly stopping to look at things!
Friday 18th September – Afternoon walk at Kendal Castle
3pm – 5pm
£15-£25pp
Join Abbi for an easy walk around Kendal castle to learn how to identify and forage for different wild foods, and what to do with them. We’ll be focusing on the different autumn species most commonly found in grassland and urban fringe environments, and in woodland terrain. We’ll have a couple of different drinks and nibbles to taste along the way made from the foraged ingredients we’ll meet on our walk!
This walk is suitable for all ages and experience levels. We will explore Castle Hill and the surrounding grasslands and woodlands in a gentle loop. Some parts of the hill are quite steep and unsuitable for mobility scooters, however we will be moving slowly and frequently stopping to look at things, and trying not to overexert ourselves!

Friday 2nd October – Foraging walk and baking workshop in Crosby Ravensworth
11.30am – 5.30pm
£65-£95pp
Join experienced forager and 2023 Great British Bake Off contestant Abbi for a day filled with wild food creativity. We’ll start with a gentle foraging walk around the village of Crosby Ravensworth in the Eden Valley, learning how to identify and forage for different autumnal ingredients to use in our baking. We’ll pick as we go, before returning to the village hall to enjoy a light lunch of wild food tasters prepared in advance for you. After lunch, we’ll don our aprons and get baking, using the ingredients we gathered in the morning to create some delicious wild bakes for you to take home with you.
This workshop is suited to people aged 10+ and all experience levels (in both foraging and baking). The walk is mostly flat and steady underfoot, but due to stiles and narrow footpath gates, it is not suitable for mobility scooters. The loop is about 1.7 miles long, and we’ll be stopping frequently to look at different species and pick our ingredients.
